FAQ ABOUT Domestic ELECTRIC GATEs
Domestic Electric Gates
Since we started supplying, installing and maintaining electric gates across Somerset and the surrounding areas of the West Country we’ve been surprised to discover that there is a high demand for the convenience and security they offer for access to domestic properties.
We’ve been approached by many clients wanting to know more about how electric gates work and their suitability for home use, so we’ve put together this list of questions and answers which we hope will bring some clarification.

No, we carry out site visits free of charge.
That will depend on many factors, such as the style of your home, the type of driveway you have, how much privacy and security you require, what your budget is, whether the gates should swing, slide or roll open and closed, and so on. We can help advise and make suggestions.
Our automated gates have an emergency manual override feature. In some cases they come with battery back up systems. If your gate won’t work we offer a fast and efficient repair service – just give us a call and we’ll arrange a visit and confirm the cost.
No, not unless it is more than 1.8 metres high.
Gates should be serviced to optimise the life of your gate automation. This helps with long-term reliability. All moving parts are subject to “wear and tear” and servicing at least once a year helps to ensure longevity of your system and compliance with health and safety standards.
There are numerous built in safety measures, and others that can be added, to ensure your gates will not open or close unexpectedly. For instance:
- Photocells are small sensors that send an infrared beam across your gate opening, which when broken, will make the gate reopen… we fit these as standard to all gate installations.
- Safety edges are rubber strips fitted to a gate and when pressed will cause the automation to stop and reverse releasing the object that has activated the safety edge.
- Induction safety loops are a coil of wire cut into the road surface .. whilst a vehicle is on the loop the gate will not close.
- Laser scanners – in some circumstances a laser scanner can be installed, this provides a customised protection zone.
We appreciate that installing new automated gates at the entrance to your home is a big investment and something you may have concerns about. That’s why we’re always happy to discuss the issue with you with no obligation.
We know you’ll learn to love your new automated gates – especially when you arrive home on a dark, cold, rainy night and don’t have to leave the car to open the gates! Please don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01373 800151 or send an email to sales@haylerwasonltd.co.uk if there’s anything else you’d like to know.
